Frequently Asked Questions

The DSA Regulations

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) state that if you want to become an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) you must:

•   Hold a full British or Northern Ireland unrestricted car driving licence;

•   Have held it for a total of at least 4 out of the past 6 years prior to entering the Register after qualifying, but:

•   A foreign driving licence, an automatic car driving licence or a provisional licence held after passing the driving test, all count towards the 4 years;

•   Not have been disqualified from driving at any time in the 4 years prior to being entered in the Register;

•   Be a fit and proper person to have your name entered in the Register. All convictions, including motoring offences still in force (i.e. not ‘spent’ under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974) will be taken into account when we assess your suitability to be entered in the Register; and

•   Pass the Register qualifying exam. A foreign full licence will count towards this three year period but it must be a foreign licence that is accepted under the ‘exchange’ scheme. For more details of the exchange system you should read Section 4 of the D.V.L.A. pamphlet D100 “What you need to know about driving licences” available at most post offices.

Q. How Long Will Training Take?
A. It does very much depend on the individual, but while you are studying for the Part 1 theory exam you will also have applied for your CRB check, which is now mandatory. The CRB process can take up to six weeks. Parts 2 & 3 can be delivered on a fast track basis. ALLPASS are as keen as you to achieve a successful outcome.

Q. What Do The Tests Comprise Of?
A. The first is a theory test and hazard perception test. Put briefly you will have to answer a series of multiple choice questions and then after this watch a series of short video clips from inside a car and click the mouse whenever you see a developing hazard. Next comes your test of driving ability. You will need to drive to a very high standard for about an hour and carry out a series of reversing exercises. The third and final test is your ability to instruct. During this test the examiner will play the part of two different pupils and ask you to teach two set subjects. Whilst this may all sound daunting it is relatively straightforward with the right amount of training and preparation.

Q. How Much Can I Earn?
A. It’s down to you the more lessons you do the greater your earnings. You can expect to earn  £35K or £40K in your second year. ALLPASS offer an excellent franchise package, which enables our instructors to retain a much larger percentage of their weekly earnings, the level of which will be purely dictated by time and effort.

Q. What Cars are Available?
A. ALLPASS operate a policy allowing our instructors to lease a Peugeot 207, Vauxhall Corsa or Ford Fiesta from our supplier, which also keeps your franchise cost down to the minimum.

Q. Can I Choose My Own Working Hours?
A. Yes! The hours and days of the week you choose to work is exactly that; your choice!

Q. Can I Choose The Area I Work?
A. ALLPASS do not want to saturate an area. So, providing a potential working area is undersubscribed, the answer is yes!

Q. Can I Accept Credit/Debit Card Payments?
A. ALLPASS has the facility to accept this type of payment on the instructor’s behalf.

Q. When Can I Take Holidays?
A. As you are self employed you are free to run your own diary and take holidays whenever you choose.

Q. Are There Opportunities For Career Advancement?
A. Most certainly yes. ALLPASS are at a very early stage in their business development and growth. This means that we will be recruiting senior personnel in the future and will obviously give close consideration to suitable candidates already working with us.
